Architectural creation in today’s workplace can be constructed through a variety of tools, simple drawings, models made of chip board, scrap bits of mixed media arranged in pleasing compositions, computer modeled renderings, and architectural computed aided drafting. Each yields a different effect that adds to the formation of an architectural object in the constructed environment. With the advances in modern technology, architects have been able to utilize newer and faster tools that aid them in designing more complicated structures requiring more coordination and attention to the building process.

With this now standardization of producing through digital means architects have been fully embedded in the computer creation of architecture, using drafting and rendering software to produce faster and realize the project in virtual settings that can impact real world conditions. With these digital tools being fresh on the minds of young architects as they come into the workplace where they are positioned to produce drawings and become architects to further the profession into a new direction. What of the tools of yesterday? Where do hand draw perspectives go? What of Charcoal renderings that create a sense of mystery as the shading is ever so slightly built up on the edge. What happened to the times that were lost in that amazing water colored pocche?

So where do the priorities lie in the minds of up and coming professionals as they change into the architects of the digital age? Are there clear sides drawn by these camps or is there a balance in the argument. With this quandary we look to those who practice what they preach, professionals in the architecture community that both educate, practice, and inform the current and upcoming groups of young professionals and students as the profession continues to evolve ever so as the art of building becomes more complicated and rewarding as we continue to define the built environment.

Please join the Emerging Professionals Committee and the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Institute of Architects at Brown University’s Grant Recital Hall October 29, 2009 for an evening of discussion to further the knowledge and interest that defines our professionals, students, and educators as they seek to affect the built environment.
