Union Studio Adds Three New Architectural Staff Members
Additions include a new Senior Associate, Associate and Architectural Designer
Union Studio Architecture & Community Design hired three architectural staff members in July, raising the Providence-based firm’s staff total from 11 to 14. Two of the three new hires relocated from other parts of the country to take a position with Union Studio. “The decision to increase our capacity was driven by a few factors,” says Founding Principal Donald Powers, “We recognized that our immediate project needs combined with our long-term goals required Union Studio to increase our horsepower, but these hires also needed to bring thought leadership to Union Studio. For us, hiring is as much about philosophical alignment and furthering our core mission as it is about having a great resume.”
Joe Haskett, RA, LEED AP has joined Union Studio as a senior associate. As the founding principal of Providence-based distill studio, Haskett has received international recognition for his innovative approach to sustainable building science and the integrated design process as evidenced by Providence’s award-winning “Box Office,” a commercial office building constructed from recycled shipping containers, for which he was the architect. Haskett has over 16 years of architectural experience which includes the adaptive re-use of historic buildings, market-rate and affordable multi-family housing, pre-fabricated building design, commercial buildings and private residences. He is an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Interior Architecture at RISD and an active member of the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA), US Green Building Council (USGBC) and the National Passive House Alliance (PHAUS). Haskett is currently working towards becoming the first Certified Passive House Consultant in the State of RI.
Jeremy Lake, AIA, LEED AP, CNU has joined the firm as an associate, relocating to Providence after eleven years at Torti Gallas and Partners in Silver Spring, Maryland. While at Torti Gallas, Jeremy focused on affordable and market rate neighborhood design, HOPE IV neighborhood revitalization projects, town planning and urban design. Jeremy is a registered architect in the State of Maryland, a LEED Accredited Professional, and is certified Construction Documents Technologist (CDT). He earned a Master of Architecture in Suburb and Town Design from the University of Miami, a Master of Architecture from the University of Miami, and a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Anthropology from Bowdoin College.
Peter Harmatuck, CNU has joined the firm as an architectural designer, relocating to Providence from Vero Beach, Florida, where he was at Merrill, Pastor and Colgan Architects for five years. Peter has a participated in nineteen charrettes, four internationally, designing everything from key civic buildings to downtown super-blocks. Peter received his Master of Architecture with a concentration in Traditional Urbanism from the University of Notre Dame, and his Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Minnesota. “We consider ourselves very fortunate to be able to attract three new hires of this caliber” adds Principal Douglas Kallfelz, “quite frankly, this is a major win for us and they are already making a significant impact with their respective skill sets.”
